Crisis Counselor & Advocate Position

Position Title: Crisis Counselor & Advocate

Reports to: Director of Victim Services 

Status: Full-time; Exempt

Hours: Monday – Friday 8:00am – 5:00 pm with 24/7 on-call status to respond to hotline calls and appear for sexual assault examinations on nights, weekends and holidays

Work Site: One Place Family Justice Center 530 S. Lawrence Street Montgomery, AL. May require some occasional travel to rural counties.

Summary: The Crisis Counselor/Advocate plans and facilitates individual and family counseling services for victims of sexual assault. The Crisis Counselor/Advocate will attend sexual assault forensic examinations to provide mental and emotional support to sexual assault victims. The Crisis Counselor/Advocate will collaborate and maintain relationships with One Place partner organizations to assist in referrals and coordination of services for victims.

Salary $52,500 annually

Major Responsibilities

· Provide individual and family counseling to victims of sexual assault utilizing a trauma-informed, victim-center modality; develop individualized service plans based on victims identified needs

· The counselor/advocate attends and observes the sexual assault nurse examination to provide emotional support for the victim and ensures that the victim rights are understood and protected.

· Secondarily, provides emotional support and guidance to family members or individuals who are present at the examination.

· Schedules and conducts an intake and assessment appointments with victims following a sexual assault examination to start crisis counseling.

· Partners with victims to develop individualized mental health treatment plans to help stabilize and restore a sense of safety for the victim.

· Accompanies victims to appointments to meetings law enforcement, court appointments, social service to provide emotional support when requested.

· Helps victims file applications for social services, victim crime compensation and orders of protection.

· Provides case management services connecting the victim to resources available within the community and works activity to ensure implementation of the service plan.

· Supports operations of the sexual assault hotline by providing crisis intervention counseling to victims on the telephone in emergent situations.

· Participates in OPFJC outreach, education, and training activities for sexual assault. May be assigned by management to participate in sexual assault coalitions.

· Design, plan, coordinate, and implement victim support groups.

· Maintains client records and performs other administrative functions appropriate to the function of the position.

· Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor, Executive Director and/or designee.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

· Excellent listening, oral and written communication skills.

· Possess great integrity, patience and empathy under pressure.

· Comfort with working in a non-judgmental fashion with individuals from diverse backgrounds, lifestyles, and belief systems.

· The ability to work flexible hours to meet the needs of victims.

Minimum Qualifications

· Master’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or closely related field.

· Associate licensed counselor approved by the Alabama Board of Examiners

· Two years of post-graduate experience and completion of the VSC 40+ hour Sexual Assault Counselor/Victim Advocate training.

· Maintain a valid Alabama driver’s license, reliable transportation, automobile insurance meeting the minimum requirement of State law.

· Pass required background check.
